EverydAI – Getting Started with AI Tools: A Guide

Welcome to our EverydAI series! In this series, we’ll show you how to easily incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into your daily life. Today, we’ll guide you step-by-step on how to use AI tools like ChatGPT or OpenAI Playground. For most people, ChatGPT is already a familiar term. The OpenAI Playground works in a similar way to the standard version of the chatbot, but allows you to define individual parameters more precisely.

ChatGPT

  1. Open Your Web Browser
Launch your preferred web browser and go to chatgpt.com .

  2. Sign Up or Log In

    • Sign Up: If you don’t have an account yet, click “Sign Up” and create one. Follow the instructions for registration.

    • Log In: If you already have an account, click “Log In” and enter your credentials.

  3. Start a New Conversation
Once logged in, click the “New Chat” button on the left side of the screen.

  4. Use System Prefix for Clear Instructions
To ensure the AI understands your instructions correctly, use the given system prefix. This prefix helps ChatGPT grasp the context and follow your directions accurately. System messages provide the AI with initial guidance, while user messages contain your questions or inputs.

    Example Format:

    System: [Prompt vom jeweiligen Artikel]
    User: [Ihre Anfrage]

A system prefix is a special type of instruction used at the beginning of a conversation to help the AI understand the context or set the rules for the interaction. It informs the AI on how it should respond to your inputs.

Screenshot 1: In this case, the system prefix helps the AI adjust its responses to be helpful and focused on everyday problems.
  1. Enter a Prompt
A prompt is the input or request you give to the AI to trigger a specific response or task. It can be a question, a command, or a request. Type your formatted prompt into the text box at the bottom of the screen. Make sure to phrase your request clearly and precisely to get the best responses.

  2. Interact with the AI Assistant
The AI assistant will respond to your prompt. You can continue the conversation by entering follow-up questions or additional prompts. The interaction is dynamic – the more context you provide, the better the AI can assist you.

OpenAI Playground

  1. Open Your Web Browser
Navigate to the OpenAI Playground in your web browser. It’s an intuitive editor that allows you to interact directly with various AI models and tailor them to your needs.

  2. Using the Editor
The Playground’s editor gives you direct access to available AI models and is easy to use. On the right side of the screen, you’ll find the settings panel, where you can adjust how the model behaves.

  1. Adjusting the Settings
Here’s an overview of the key parameters you can adjust for your interactions:

    • Model: Choose which model you want to use, such as GPT-4 or GPT-3.5. These models vary in performance and complexity.

    • Temperature: Use the slider to control the creativity of the responses. A higher value (up to 2.0) will generate more creative and random responses, while a lower value (down to 0.0) provides more precise and focused answers.

    • Max Tokens: Set the maximum number of “tokens” allowed. A token can be an entire word, part of a word, or even a single character. The more tokens you allow, the longer the responses can be.

    • Top P: This value determines how conservative or creative the model will be in generating tokens. A lower value makes the model more cautious in its predictions.

    • Frequency Penalty: Increase this value to reduce the likelihood of the model repeating itself.

    • Presence Penalty: This encourages the model to bring up new topics rather than repeating familiar content. Higher values lead to more varied responses.

  2. Fine-Tuning and Experimenting
The OpenAI Playground allows you to combine various settings to tailor the output or results to your needs. Here are some helpful features:

    • Refine and Retry Sequences: Try different inputs (prompts) and settings to see how the results change. This allows you to gradually improve your request until you get the desired answer.

    • Stop Sequences: Use this function to define which words or phrases should stop the generation process. This is particularly useful to prevent unnecessary or lengthy outputs.

    • Inject Start/Restart Text: Use this option to automatically insert text at the beginning or in specific sections of the conversation, guiding the flow and directing the model in a particular direction.

  3. Saving and Sharing Prompts
If you’ve created a specific configuration or a successful prompt, you can save it for future sessions. It’s also possible to share your prompts with others to collaborate on projects or provide inspiration.

The OpenAI Playground offers extensive possibilities for customizing AI models to suit your needs. With its flexible settings, you can create creative, precise, or focused interactions, helping you tackle projects or questions effectively. Experiment with the different features to make the most of the Playground’s potential.
